First crafted in 1897 Mexico by German brewmaster Wilhelm Hasse. Originally called "Siglo XX" ("20th century"), named to commemorate the arrival of the new century; (the Spanish language uses Roman numerals for centuries) the bottles were marked "XX", two Xs, or "Dos Equis".
